What parameters due you use to judge between beginner and intermediate. Would the "long way round" over katbakkies on last Sunday's ride be classed as beginner or intermediate?
Ater and Clare
Hein note date change.....are you still in?
Ater, the ride done on Sunday was equal to a beginners ride route.
The intermediate will be slightly faster (in places where it is safe to do so) and will have sand and rocky dirt roads to cover. Not big rocks but typical of the road from Algeria to the Oasis.
The route home from the Oasis will be the same as Sundays ride.
Oops.
I deleted Geoff's double post - and subsequently lost all posts after that.
I remember Wayne said he'd be joining with Jo as pillion.
Profuse apologies to all.
Jip, still in.
Ek is in Geoff.Hein Carstens
would love to but..
I'm having Sunday conflict issues..
any chance of there ever being Saturday rides?
[yes, I did read the majority-of-riders-free-on-Sundays bit]
Geoff is in retail and has to work most Saturdays. So we need to organize some Saturday excursions led by someone who is available on Saturdays.
Count me IN.
Shah
Ater,
The road from Algeria to Oasis is driven by sedans, but at very slow speed.
There is a lot of sudden patches of shifting sand and the rest is mainly very loose stone chip gravel.
Expect corrugations -best taken fast, not slow.
Twisties, ups and downs, sudden turns and loads of dust.
It has to be driven fast and assertively.
You cannot dither, you'll fall and fall on hard angular kak!
Beginners can do it; and they will just paddle at 20kph, and still have an off or two. They'll also hold up the rest.
It's an exhilerating ride and I did it a few weeks ago.
ag, maar ek is lus! Now i am really sorry I missed out on Rony's sand course this week. How fast is fast and how bad is the sand?
Fast is about 110kph on good dirt and when safe to do so and 120-130 on Tar. No race mind you but I stretch the distance meaning that we need to keep a good speed to be on time!
There are only a few patches of soft sand but no "twee spoor" stuff.
I reiterate..........It is no race!
Andy has summed it up quite well.!

way cool!
Andy, I'd like to ride that with you.. and no! not because you can patch me up :)
I've been as far as the start of that patch, but got a wee bit nervous doing it alone..
I'll join this ride, thanks.
Geoff, I've sent you an e-mail. I'm in (for now - depends on how the Boss reacts after I've told her I'll be away 2 week-ends in a row, biking....)
I covered that road the past weekend with my bakkie. There is very little sand but the road is badly badly corrugated especially between Dwarsrivier and Matjiesrivier. The Uitkyk Pass is in bad condition.
I didn't get to complete Cederberg with our last excursion, but, don't think I'm ready for this one either : speed and sand sounds a bit overwhelming.
Is it the main road through the cederberg we follow?
There may be one or two sandy bits... but its certainly not deep sand or anything like that.
The only real sandy I've encountered in the cederberg is on the road to whuppertal on either side of Esselbank.
Don't forget the Swartland Cloud........plenty sand there. Of which we will do a very small portion.

Wha?
Now you tell me!
Oh well... how hard can it be?
Will go check it out with my bakkie first and do it next time, figure the sweepers and back-up angels deserve a break!
Please put me on the list.
Olaf
I spoke to the Boss (or is it: The Boss has spoken??). She has already made another commitment for us for that week-end, so I am out.... (and I SO wanted to see Olaf putting some mileage on his unused tyres, and Shah parading in his costume....). Next time!
Andy Connell has again volunteered to take a second group up to the Oasis so we are no longer on a waiting list and there is space available.
Both groups will ride the same route but 30 minutes apart.
Still interested to join us?
